DANCER
Folk Dances: Russian folkloric dance, just like folkloric dance forms from many other countries, is a mixture of traditional music and dances done in villages and cities, on the streets and in ceremonial situations, in parties and celebrations, combined with classical movement forms such as ballet, modern dance, and sometimes gymnastics or acrobatics. By mixing these genres, dances are created which use the stories, music, and costumes of a nation or region, yet which have integrated aesthetic styles which are popular on the international stage with varied audiences.
Ballet: The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow and the Kirov in St. Petersburg, both renowned opera houses, also take an exceptional place in the history of ballet. Each ballet company embodies a performing tradition dating back as early as the 18th century. Generations of their dancers have been fascinating and entrancing audiences with their artistry. Pavlova, Nijinsky, Nureyev and Baryshnikov are all students of these companies and have become household names in the west.
Ballet enthusiasts might enjoy a virtual visit to the National Gallery of Australia. Their exhibit of costumes for the Russian Ballet or Ballets Russes is pure eye candy. Enjoy!
